Sophia Fouché is a 78-year-old mother of five.

She married her second husband, the father of her youngest two daughters, after her first husband passed away.

With five children and one income, life was not easy, but they managed.

Sophia’s youngest daughter writes: “In general, my father was a good man when he wasn’t drinking. When he was under the influence, however, our happy home turned into one of fear and terror.”

Sophia’s children all flew the nest, and her husband retired in 2020.

Her life then turned darker as she became the target of increasing emotional, verbal and physical abuse.

In March last year, Sophia and her husband, who was drinking heavily, had an argument that turned physical. He pulled her off her chair by her right arm. He pushed her, and she fell on the same arm. This caused internal bleeding in her elbow joint, as well as a haematoma in her hand.

Fearing another violent attack, Sophia did not seek medical assistance and did not tell anyone.

Sophia eventually shared the truth with her daughter, who helped her seek medical assistance.

Sophia’s husband has since passed away, and her arm is now virtually unusable.

Sophia’s daughter helped her contact Operation Healing Hands, whose surgeons are hopeful they can restore the use of her arm through an elbow joint replacement.

They are willing to assist with surgical and medical services at no cost. However, they need R50 000 towards the cost of the prosthesis and hospital fees.
