When Advocate Anna Mojapelo started New Jerusalem Children’s Home 26 years ago, in 2000, HIV/Aids was rife, leaving scores of children orphaned and homeless.

“We wanted to give these children a home, a family, an education and a future,” says Anna, who started her professional life as a children’s court prosecutor.

She saw first-hand how homelessness and poverty turned children to a life of crime.

Today, substance abuse and unemployment are the main reasons why children are placed in New Jerusalem’s care, according to Anna. Most of the 120 children who call New Jerusalem their home stay until they matriculate.

Anna quickly saw that a small state subsidy was not nearly adequate to properly take care of 120 children. In 2009, Anna started the New Jerusalem Preschool to serve their own children, as well as children from the surrounding community, whose parents pay a monthly fee. At its peak, the preschool had 120 enrolled children, providing a critical income stream to help sustain the orphanage.

Due to a lack of funds, Anna has not been able to maintain or improve the preschool playground, which has seen enrolment drop to 50 children.

“Parents cite safety concerns. Our 250m² playground is dilapidated, has no impact surfacing, no shade and an unsafe old jungle gym,” says Anna.

She had to retrench several ECD teachers, and the home’s income has taken a significant knock.

Anna has reached out to Good Morning Angels to assist with the three-phase upgrade of their preschool playground: a rubberised play surface at R115 000, a heavy-duty jungle gym at R162 000 and a shade net structure at R35 000, which will come to a total of R312 000.

The impact of your sponsorship

For the children:

For sustainability:

A safe, attractive preschool will restore enrolment from 50 to 120 children. This will increase monthly income by approximately R80 000, directly funding the orphanage’s food, uniforms and care costs.

For the community:

We will re-employ six to eight local ECD practitioners and assistants we previously retrenched. Each job supports a family in Midrand.
