Helping four SPCAs to continue the great work they do
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Every town has an SPCA, but they need your assistance to help the animals who cannot speak for themselves and the pet owners who do not know where else to turn.
When you say SPCA, everybody knows what you are talking about: that place that looks after pets and animals.
In most cases, the SPCA must remove pets from households or circumstances where they are neglected and, in extreme cases, abused and tortured.
The SPCAs under the NSPCA are mandated by law to act on behalf of animals, but they are not state-funded.

This means that all SPCAs must raise private funding while also fulfilling their duties.
Today, Good Morning Angels will help not one or two, but four SPCAs that serve the pets and people of Gauteng.
1. SPCA Tshwane
REQUEST FOR: Jeanine Greatorex, Chairperson of SPCA Tshwane, which has facilities in Waltloo and Centurion.
The upgrading of the kennels is a major concern, especially at the 250 kennels in Waltloo. Centurion has 160 kennels, but Jeanine says they receive much more assistance than Waltloo.
Just last week they received a commitment from a donor to upgrade 20 of the kennels.
Jeanine Greatorex says they need to redo the floors, as the cracked cement in the kennels makes the containment of diseases very difficult.
She says the most pressing upgrade is needed in the puppy kennels before winter. They need infrared lights to be installed for extra heat at night, as it gets extremely cold in winter, and ideally a solar system to power these lights to counter power disruptions and limit running costs.

2. Kempton Park SPCA
REQUEST FOR: Roelof Badenhorst, Committee Member of SPCA Kempton Park

My name is Roelof Badenhorst and I am currently serving as a committee member of the Kempton Park SPCA. Although I have a full-time job, I find great pleasure in helping those who cannot speak for themselves, namely the stray, neglected and abused animals that we receive at the SPCA on a daily basis.
I have seen animals come into our society that I thought would not survive, but due to the dedication of our staff, committee and members of the public, these animals are adopted into their forever homes.
- Our kennels need urgent repairs, including electrical wiring as well as broken gates and similar issues.
- At any given time we have about 80 to 100 animals in our care and food is always an issue. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

3. Springs SPCA
REQUEST FOR: Nicky Meiring, Chairperson of Springs SPCA
Springs SPCA uses 150 kg of animal food every day.
They have domestic pets in their care, but also farm animals such as donkeys, cattle, sheep and goats. They take in around 370 animals a month, which is more than 4 500 a year.

Our food stores are almost completely depleted and we urgently need help.
Right now our shelves are nearly empty, while we still have many hungry dogs and puppies relying on us every single day. With the number of animals currently in our care, food disappears incredibly quickly.
If you can help, please consider donating dog food or puppy food. Every bag makes a difference and helps us ensure that no animal in our care goes hungry.
If you would like to help but cannot get to us, we have created a quick R200 PayFast donation link that goes directly towards purchasing food for the animals:

4. Midrand SPCA
REQUEST FOR: Pam Pretorius, General Manager and Inspector of Midrand SPCA
In January this year, one of Midrand SPCA’s dedicated workers was bitten in the face by one of the dogs he was caring for. Daniel has healed very well and is back at work.
Despite the personal challenges and risks they face, the staff at Midrand are dedicated to the animals they serve.
The General Manager of Midrand SPCA, Pam Pretorius, says the toughest reality so far this year is a sharp increase in cruelty cases. She says she has been to court 37 times for just one case, which keeps getting postponed.
Their biggest needs are:
- Tick and flea treatment
- Blankets
- Washing powder
- Fuel costs
- A sterilisation campaign
ANGEL: The Good Morning Angels Fund NPC
SPONSORING: The Good Morning Angels Fund will assist Midrand SPCA with R50 000 towards the items on their needs list: tick and flea treatment, blankets, washing powder, fuel and a sterilisation campaign.
