Kabelo Moche from Hammanskraal aced his matric finals with seven distinctions last year and was the top student at his school.

It is no surprise that he has been selected and accepted to study medicine at Wits University, his dream course at the university of his choice.

Kabelo achieved this despite financial hardship and not always having even the basics, such as food to eat.

"This young man could so easily have given up when life became hard. Instead, he worked harder," writes Chantel van den Berg, whom Kabelo has never personally met.

"He is the kind of future doctor who will serve with compassion because he understands struggle."

Kabelo and Chantel's paths crossed quite by accident in June last year. Chantel discovered that her business pay as you go cell number, used across all her firm’s branding in Vanderbijlpark, had suddenly stopped working.

Her service provider informed her that the number had been sold to someone else. Chantel called the number and Kabelo answered.

She explained her predicament and he assisted her with a SIM swap to regain her number. She reimbursed him for the new SIM card and the data he had loaded.

A few months later, Kabelo messaged Chantel to ask for assistance with food for him and his brother, promising to pay her back. Chantel helped him. Kabelo continued to keep Chantel updated on his matric progress.

He sent her his matric results when he received them on 13 January. Seven distinctions. Chantel admits that she “ugly cried” with pride and joy over Kabelo’s achievement.

Even though Kabelo has been approved for NSFAS funding, it does not cover everything he needs, including food, a laptop, transport, and general living expenses. There is also a shortfall in his accommodation fees.

That is why Chantel reached out to Good Morning Angels on Kabelo’s behalf to assist this future South African doctor as he prepares to step into a future where he can one day give back tenfold to his community and our country.

ORIGINAL REQUEST

Dear Good Morning Angels Team,

My name is Chantel van den Berg, and I am writing to you with a story that restored my faith in humanity and reminded me why young South Africans deserve to be seen, backed, and believed in.

On 18 June 2025, I discovered that my office cell pay as you go number, used across all my firm’s branding, had suddenly stopped working. After visiting the service provider, I was informed that my number had been sold to someone else. Due to POPIA restrictions, they could not tell me to whom.

Desperate, I decided to phone my own number, hoping to explain the situation.

A young man named Kabelo answered.

I explained what had happened and pleaded with him to help me recover my number. Without hesitation, and without knowing me at all, Kabelo agreed to help. He explained that he was a matric pupil in Hammanskraal, busy studying for exams, and could not go into a store. Instead, he sent me a voice note with clear, step by step instructions on how to complete the SIM swap virtually.

Because of him, I got my number back.

I reimbursed Kabelo for the SIM card and the data he had loaded, and that was that, or so I thought.

A few weeks later, I received a message from an unknown number:

“Hi Chantel, so sorry to bother you. I know we are strangers, but I really need your help. My brother and I don’t have money for our lunchboxes, and I am in matric so I can’t afford to miss lessons. Can you please help us? We can pay you back if you want. Please.”

I immediately sent money to his phone and replied:

“Morning Kabelo. No need to pay me back. Just go and ace your matric.”

Time passed.

On 8 August, Kabelo sent me a certificate showing that he was the number one matric student at his school.

I told him how proud I was and reminded him that dreams are valid, no matter where you come from.

Today, 13 January 2026, Kabelo sent me his final matric results.

Seven distinctions.

I cried proper, ugly tears on the way back to work.

This young man could so easily have given up when life became hard. Instead, he worked harder.

Kabelo’s dream is to study medicine. He will only hear tomorrow whether he has been accepted, but the greater challenge lies ahead with funding, support, and people willing to back his journey.

Kabelo is a young South African who faced hardship and turned it into excellence. He has already shown integrity, intelligence, humility, and perseverance. He is the kind of future doctor who will serve with compassion because he understands struggle.

Good Morning Angels, I truly believe this young man deserves wings.

Please consider helping Kabelo as he prepares to step into a future where he can one day give back tenfold to his community and our country.

With gratitude and hope,
Groete / Kind regards
Chantel van den Berg
