Lighthouse Children's Home in Rustenburg: struggling to keep its lights on

Good Morning Angels brought the angels together to assist Lighthouse Children's Home in Rustenburg in keeping the lights on and continuing to be a safe haven for children in need.

Lighthouse Children’s Home is a safe space and home for more than 70 vulnerable children and 12 babies in Rustenburg.

The home was founded by Elsa Doubell in December 2019 to provide a home for 11 children. Today, Elsa and her team care for 41 girls, 32 boys, and 12 babies between the ages of three months and 18 years. That’s 85 children!

All the children who live at Lighthouse Children’s Home are placed there by Social Services or the police. As a children’s home, they are always in need of food, nappies, and other necessities. However, electricity has become an unaffordable and urgent need.

Members of the community are urged to buy prepaid electricity for the home. They have a good generator for the days when Rustenburg experiences power outages; however, they do not have the funds to buy diesel to run it. Elsa says: “We don’t use the generator during the day. Our greatest need is at night, when it is cold … many of our children are afraid of the dark too because of what happened to them before they arrived here. It costs R1,800 per night to run the generator, and that we simply cannot afford.”

The Lighthouse children are also in need of warm clothes and blankets for the winter. “The younger children can wear hand-me-downs that are still in good condition, but we do not have a Plan B for our older children,” says Elsa.
