R2,5 million to assist patients with cochlear implants: Meet our first recipient
After Good Morning Angels helped raise R2,5 million for former Miss South Africa Mia le Roux’s AboutSound initiative, we meet the first recipient of a cochlear implant.
To mark Mandela Day last month, Good Morning Angels collaborated with former Miss SA Mia le Roux and her AboutSound initiative to raise funds for cochlear implants.
We managed to raise R2,5 million to cover the costs of the implant procedures for 25 state patients on Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital’s cochlear implant list.
Three patients received their implants at the Ear & Eye Clinic in Meyersdal on 23 July, and this past Friday, their devices were switched on. These patients are Abdullah Myles (1 year and 7 months), Amaleko Baloyi (2) and Moloko Mokgawa (9).
This is the start of their journey of audiological and speech therapy at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital’s audiology department, which will enable them to hear and speak!

AboutSound
AboutSound is a public-private initiative that assists vulnerable state patients at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in receiving life-changing cochlear implants.
The devices have been secured, and the patients have already been selected and screened.
The Ear & Eye Clinic in Meyersdal has generously agreed to perform three cochlear implant surgeries per month at a substantially reduced rate of R100,000 per patient for this project.
That is what the R2,5 million raised will cover.
On Wednesday, 19 August, nine-year-old Moloko Mokgawa and his dad, Mpho, from Tembisa joined Breakfast with Martin Bester in studio.
Moloko had normal hearing from birth. At the beginning of this year, he contracted meningitis and lost his ability to hear completely. This makes him a very good candidate for regaining his hearing and picking up speech, as he has already developed these skills.
Still, it is a process. His device is set at a low capacity and will gradually be set higher, or louder, until Moloko’s brain gets used to the new way of hearing and interpreting sound.
