Woman finds solace in caring for others after husband kills two of her children
After her husband killed two of her children, Adele Saayman turned to caring for others. Now Good Morning Angels and Operation Healing Hands will assist her with a life-changing surgery.
Eighteen years ago, Adele and her eldest son survived a family tragedy: her then-husband shot and killed their two younger children, wounded the eldest son, and then killed himself.
As it was a murder scene, the bodies were immediately taken away as evidence.
I never got to say goodbye to my kids.
Because of this, Adele decided to become a caregiver, someone who looks after terminally ill patients at home, right to the end.
“Now I help other families say goodbye, because it is such an important part of finding closure,” says Adele.
She also gives motivational talks to help grieving families forgive and move on with their lives.
This was not the last of her hardships.
Adele experienced excruciating pain in her hip and lower back, with no guarantee that she would receive a hip replacement at a government hospital in less than three years. This would have brought an end to her work.
“I sometimes need to lift my patients up, help them take care of themselves, and move their bodies to wash them. This would all be impossible from a wheelchair. Even with my hip only partially functioning, I already realised that I would not be able to do this job anymore. It was my whole life.”
In 2020, Operation Healing Hands assisted Adele with her hip replacement, free of charge. She was able to resume her life and work pain-free.
Now, five years later, Adele needs the same operation on her other hip and, once again, Operation Healing Hands is willing to assist with surgical and medical services at no cost. However, they still need R50 000 to cover the hospital and consumable costs.
