Phumza Mankayi from Johannesburg is a talented writer.

She worked in copywriting, content writing, and community management and administration for major banks, media companies, and advertising agencies.

She was building a thriving career until about two years ago, when she suffered a major stroke.

"When I woke from the stroke, I could not speak, walk or lift my right hand."

Phumza says she is 50% recovered, with every day bringing her a step closer to healing through speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy sessions.

She has not been able to work during this time, and the ongoing cost of therapy has become a challenge for Phumza and her family. Her mother is a 61-year-old domestic worker in the Eastern Cape, and her father is retired.

Phumza created a donation page to raise R50 000. She has already raised over R22 000. She reached out to Good Morning Angels to share her story as both a learning experience for others and a call for compassion.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:

Dear Jacaranda FM,

My name is Phumza Mankayi, and I live in Johannesburg. In April 2024, I suffered a major stroke that affected the right side of my body and my ability to speak and write.

My right hand has improved significantly, but it still needs support. I walk with the help of an elastic Dictus brace, and I have made good progress. My brain is about 50% recovered, but I still struggle with speaking certain words I know and remembering people’s names. When I woke from the stroke, I could not speak, walk or lift my right hand.

I am still recovering. Although my speech is slower, I understand clearly and can communicate at times. Every day is a step forward in my healing journey.

Before the stroke, I worked in copywriting, UX writing, content writing, and community management and administration for over ten years with organisations such as Capitec, Showmax, Standard Bank, MultiChoice, DVT Software Solutions, HumanInsights, Ogilvy, Mortimer Harvey, Base Two Digital Agency, as well as businesses such as Somatica Institute and Breathing Grace Therapy.

Today, I am rebuilding my strength and independence through speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy sessions.

Unfortunately, the ongoing cost of therapy at RHP Rehabilitation has become a challenge for me and my family. My mother is a 61-year-old domestic worker and is unable to assist financially. My father lives in the Eastern Cape and is retired.

I would be deeply grateful if you could share my story on your platform, not only to raise awareness about stroke recovery, but also to help me reach someone who may be willing to donate or sponsor my rehabilitation sessions.

To date, I have raised R21 830. I still need R50 000 or more.

Please consider my message as both a learning story for others and a call for compassion. I hope it inspires people who may also be living with the effects of a stroke, while helping me continue my recovery journey.

Warm regards,
Phumza Mankayi
