Jané Mia Roodt lost her mother after a long battle with cancer while she was in Grade 11

Her grandmother, Karen Venter, has been her only family since then.

Karen, who is nearing retirement and has exhausted all other financial options, reached out to Good Morning Angels for assistance with Jané’s second-year tuition fees, saying that she has "hit a financial wall".

Karen lost both her daughters, including Jané’s mother, as well as her own mother, within the space of a few years.

Jané's mother did not have medical aid, so Karen took out loans to pay for her cancer treatment - loans she is still paying off long after her daughter's passing.

Last year, Jané studied hard to complete a bridging course so that she could enrol for a BCom Accounting qualification, while working a full-time job to assist her gran financially.

"The total amount required is R53,875.50," writes Karen.

"She has already overcome the loss of her mother and the stress of our financial situation to pass her bridging course. Please do not let her future end here because her grandmother has run out of money."

ORIGINAL REQUEST

Dear Martin Bester, the Angels Team, and SABAT Batteries,

My name is Karen Venter. I am writing to you as a grandmother and legal guardian who is terrified of failing her granddaughter.

I am pleading for financial assistance for my granddaughter, Jané Mia Roodt, to continue her Bachelor of Accounting (BCom) studies at Boston City Campus (Pretoria North).

Her academic journey

This will be her second year of study. Last year, she had to complete a bridging course as she did not have Accounting as a school subject. We managed to scrape together the funds to pay for that first year, and she worked incredibly hard to pass. She has proven that she has what it takes, but I have now exhausted every last cent I have.

Our situation

Life has been cruel to our family. I lost both my daughters and my own mother within the space of just a few years. My granddaughter’s mother passed away during the lockdown after a long and heartbreaking battle with cancer, when Jané was only in Grade 11.

Because my daughter had no medical aid, I took out substantial personal loans to pay for her chemotherapy, radiation, and hospital bills in an attempt to save her. She passed away, leaving no inheritance, and the court granted me full custody of her daughter.

I am a single parent nearing retirement. I am drowning in debt from these medical bills and can no longer borrow money. I have supported Jané this far, but I have now hit a wall.

The request

We urgently need assistance with her tuition fees for her second year (2026). The total amount required is R53,875.50.

She has already overcome the loss of her mother and the stress of our financial situation to pass her bridging course. Please do not let her future end here because her grandmother has run out of money.

I have attached the necessary documentation, including her results from last year and the quotation for this year.

Thank you for hearing a grandmother’s plea.

Kind regards,
Karen Venter
