Africa Drone Kings: Drone technology that goes beyond selling a flying machine
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Africa Drone Kings is proving that the opportunity in drone technology goes far beyond selling a flying machine.
Founded by Vice Phiri and Andrew Mokoto, the Johannesburg-born business helps farmers, mines, security companies and other customers put drones to productive use.
Customers can buy or hire drones, receive training, arrange finance and insurance, and access servicing, repairs and technical support.
With more than 10,000 hours of drone flying behind it, the business has expanded beyond Johannesburg into the Western Cape and Zimbabwe.
In the process, it has had to solve a challenge familiar to many growing businesses: how do you keep the entrepreneurial speed that got you started without becoming dependent on a handful of people to make everything happen?
Chief operating officer Noluthando Zitha has played an important role in that transition.
A civil engineer who initially joined as a project manager, Noluthando began bringing greater structure to the founder-led business, clarifying roles, separating responsibilities and building repeatable ways of working.
That structure is increasingly important as Africa Drone Kings looks to its next stage of growth.
The opportunity now extends beyond once-off drone sales to the services that keep the technology useful. Spraying, training, maintenance and ongoing technical and operational support can create longer-term customer relationships and recurring revenue.
It leads to a valuable lesson for any growing business: Build speed into systems.
Many businesses grow because a few energetic people know what needs to happen and make it happen. But as customers, employees and locations multiply, relying on memory and a few key individuals becomes a constraint.
The answer is to capture what works, clarify who is responsible for what and build systems that allow others to deliver consistently.
Africa Drone Kings’ journey shows what becomes possible when entrepreneurial energy is supported by structure: a business better equipped to expand, develop new services and grow without needing the same people everywhere.
