Converge Solutions: Building South African software for some of the world’s toughest challenges
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Converge Solutions creates software that helps hospitals, banks and insurance businesses operate more efficiently, securely and reliably.
When software works well, most people never notice it.
But in hospitals, banks and insurance businesses, the systems running behind the scenes can influence everything from patient care to financial security. That's where Converge Solutions has built its reputation.
Founded eight years ago by Johann Joubert together with co-founders Jaco Cromhout and Kobus van der Merwe, the business develops software for industries where reliability, security and accuracy are essential.
The three founders had spent almost two decades working together inside a large technology company before deciding to start something of their own.
Johann had grown frustrated watching customers with genuine problems struggle to find solutions within the constraints of a large corporate environment.
Instead of asking why something couldn't be done, he wanted to build a business that started every conversation with, "How can we?"
Healthcare has also been deeply personal for Johann. After surviving a serious bus accident as a child that left him with multiple fractures and a long recovery, he experienced first-hand the life-changing impact of quality healthcare.
Today, that experience continues to shape Converge's work developing software that helps hospitals improve workflows and patient care.
Reflecting on the journey, Johann believes one lesson has remained constant: Belief must come before proof, but it must always be accompanied by discipline.
Building something meaningful often requires investing long before the market fully recognises the opportunity, while carefully ensuring every decision strengthens the business.
Business growth specialist Pavlo Phitidis believes Converge's story also highlights an important lesson for established businesses looking to scale.
As businesses grow, founders can easily become the bottleneck. When every sale, implementation and strategic decision depends on one person, growth eventually slows.
His advice is simple: Build for the channel.
By packaging expertise into products, creating repeatable systems and developing trusted partner networks, businesses can expand into new markets while maintaining consistent quality.
It's an approach that allows founders to focus less on doing everything themselves and more on building businesses that can grow well beyond their own time and capacity.
