Fabrinox: Why the best growth can come from the customers you already have
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
From a factory in Paarl to projects across 36 countries, Fabrinox has built a growth strategy around becoming more valuable to the customers it already has.
From a factory in Paarl to projects across 36 countries, Fabrinox is proving that South African manufacturing skills can compete on an international stage.
Led by Managing Director Wessel van Zyl, Fabrinox has grown its capabilities far beyond manufacturing individual metal components.
Today, the business can build larger assemblies, deliver complex projects, and send South African teams around the world to install and maintain equipment.
Its story began more than three decades ago alongside packaging company Filmatic. Engineer André Visser was tasked with developing the metal manufacturing operation and later led a management buyout.
In 2023, Wessel took over the day-to-day leadership of Fabrinox, while André increasingly focused on business development and opening new markets.
What stands out about Fabrinox is not simply the breadth of what it can do, but how it uses those capabilities to deepen customer relationships.
A customer might initially ask Fabrinox to manufacture a component. Deliver that exceptionally well and the next opportunity could be an assembly. That can become a larger project, followed by installation and ongoing maintenance.
It’s a model that Pavlo Phitidis builds in for this Future50 Growth Tip: Build marriages, not one-offs.
A full order book can disguise a vulnerable business when every job begins and ends as a once-off transaction. Stronger businesses look for customers where great delivery today can earn a deeper piece of work tomorrow.
For Fabrinox, that means choosing where it can be exceptional, aligning its people behind that promise, and progressively becoming more valuable to the right customers.
The result is deeper relationships, more predictable work and the opportunity to take South African skills and capability into more markets around the world – while keeping as much manufacturing value as possible at home.
