Most entrepreneurs can point to a moment that changed everything.

For Siyabonga Khumalo, founder of Khulio Electric, that moment came when he discovered a struggling business with valuable manufacturing assets and product rights that were at risk of disappearing.

At the time, Siyabonga had a secure job, a young family and every reason to play it safe. Instead, he made a calculated decision that would shape his future.

He left his job, invested his pension and acquired the assets that would become the foundation of Khulio Electric.

Today, the company employs around 60 people and manufactures medium-voltage switchgear, critical electrical equipment used in power stations, mines, hospitals, municipalities and industrial facilities across South Africa.

But the story is about far more than electrical equipment. It is about recognising an opportunity when others see risk.

Growing up near Richards Bay, Siyabonga developed an early talent for technical drawing and spent years building his expertise in electrical design, project management and manufacturing.

When the opportunity to acquire the business emerged, he did not take a blind leap. He understood the products, the customers and the industry.

That experience gave him the confidence to act.

Today, Khulio Electric helps keep important infrastructure running while preserving valuable manufacturing skills and technical capabilities in South Africa.

His advice to other business owners is simple: fear does not disappear before a difficult decision. The key is to do the work, understand the risks and then decide whether the opportunity is worth pursuing.

It is a lesson many entrepreneurs will recognise. The biggest opportunities rarely arrive with guarantees.
