QualiPak JHB: The packaging partner behind South Africa's growing brands
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
QualiPak JHB founder Graham Hepburn shares how flexible packaging solutions and growing alongside ambitious customers have helped build a resilient business.
Walk through any supermarket and you'll see shelves filled with colourful bottles, jars and cans competing for your attention.
Behind many of those eye-catching products is a process most shoppers never think about: turning a great product idea into packaging that's ready for the retail shelf.
For more than 20 years, QualiPak JHB has helped make that happen.
Founded by Graham Hepburn, the Johannesburg-based business specialises in applying printed shrink sleeves to bottles, jars, cans and other containers, helping businesses package their products professionally without having to commit to large production volumes from day one.
Graham's own path into the packaging industry was anything but conventional. Before founding QualiPak JHB, he worked across industries including construction, automotive, engineering and manufacturing.
It was only after discovering the technical world of shrink-sleeve packaging that he found the business he would spend the next two decades building.
Today, QualiPak supports businesses of every size, but its flexibility makes it particularly valuable to growing brands.
Instead of ordering hundreds of thousands of printed containers before knowing whether a product will succeed, customers can produce small trial runs, test different designs and refine their offering before scaling up production.
Like many entrepreneurs, Graham's journey has not been without setbacks.
The business has overcome industrial action, significant customer losses and even an organised robbery that exposed unexpected gaps in its insurance cover.
Looking back, Graham says one of the biggest lessons was never to assume a business is protected simply because it has insurance.
Every business owner should understand exactly what their policy covers and test it against the worst-case scenarios their business could realistically face.
Business growth specialist Pavlo Phitidis believes QualiPak's story also highlights a broader lesson for growing businesses.
Rather than waiting for enquiries or becoming dependent on one large customer, businesses should deliberately seek out ambitious customers whose own growth creates opportunities for both businesses to succeed together.
As Pavlo puts it: "Grow with growing customers."
By becoming a trusted partner early in a customer's journey and building the systems to support them as they expand, businesses create stronger relationships, more predictable work and a more resilient future.
It's a simple idea, but one that has the power to transform how businesses grow.
