Zebbies Electrical: From a family business to a national lighting retailer
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Zebbies Electrical, a long-standing lighting retailer in South Africa, traces its origins back to 1962
Founded by Neville Zebora as a family-run operation, the business began with a focus on supplying lighting products for homes and commercial spaces.
From these early beginnings, Zebbies Electrical has grown into a national retailer, with 15 locations across multiple regions and a broad customer base spanning the residential, hospitality and commercial sectors.
A transition in ownership marked an important point in the company’s history. Neville Rowland, who initially joined the business as Chief Financial Officer, later acquired the company.
Following his sudden passing in 2017, leadership transitioned to Vanessa Marshall, who now heads up Zebbies Electrical and oversees its continued operations.
An operational focus on product and service
Under Marshall’s leadership, the business has maintained its core operational focus while refining its product range and internal processes. Zebbies Electrical employs between 21 and 50 staff members and continues to serve customers nationally through its retail network and supplier relationships.
In addition to its retail offering, Zebbies Electrical works with customers as well as industry professionals, including designers and installers.
The business also provides lighting planning support, assisting with product selection for a range of environments such as homes, hotels and commercial developments. Its product range is informed by ongoing monitoring of international market developments.
Vanessa’s advice to other business owners is that leadership can be lonely. Find someone you can trust who can hold you accountable, so that you are not just busy being busy, but focused on what matters.
Looking ahead
As the lighting sector continues to evolve, Zebbies Electrical has indicated plans to expand its e-commerce offering alongside its existing retail presence. The business is also placing increased focus on energy-efficient and smart lighting solutions, reflecting broader industry trends.
To move from single sales to secured ongoing revenue, Pavlo’s action advice to Vanessa and the team is three-tiered:
Action 1: Sell monthly lighting care
Because hotels and lodges need lights working every day.
Result: Stable income without new branches.
Action 2: Win architects and designers early
Because they set the look and feel before anyone buys.
Result: You become the default choice.
Action 3: Build trade accounts for installers
Because electricians buy bulbs every week.
Result: More volume through existing stores.
