133 Gauteng clinics now offering lenacapavir: Find your nearest one
More than 130 clinics across Gauteng are now offering lenacapavir, the twice-yearly HIV prevention injection. Check the list below to find the clinic.
South Africa recently rolled out lenacapavir, a groundbreaking twice-yearly injection that helps prevent HIV infection. According to the World Health Organization, globally, an estimated 1.2 to 1.3 million people become newly infected with HIV each year, and an estimated 40.8 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2024
Lenacapavir is aimed at reducing the stats and saving lives.
South Africa is amongst the nine African countries to offer lenacapavir. Other countries include Botswana, Eswatini, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It was launched in June.
The injection has already been well received across Gauteng. Earlier this month, Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Steve Mabona revealed that more than 6,000 people had started using lenacapavir across the province, exceeding the department’s initial target of 4,766.
Like all medications, lenacapavir may cause side effects. The most common are mild and include headaches, nausea, and reactions at the injection site such as pain, discomfort, itching, redness, swelling, hardened skin or a small lump. In rare cases, more serious side effects, including changes to the immune system, may occur. Anyone who experiences severe or persistent side effects should seek medical attention.
The Johannesburg Health District has released a list of clinics where residents can access the injection. With 133 facilities now offering the service, finding a clinic near you has become easier.
