5 Benefits of farting every day
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Did you know that fart gas can help protect your brain? Yip, it is time to sound the trumpets with pride.
A new study has found that humans fart twice as much as was once believed.
The average person passes gas around 14 times a day, but some can sound the trumpets up to 23 times a day.
However, the University of Maryland has found that a healthy adult releases flatus around 32 times a day.
The university created Smart Underwear to track hydrogen in people's farts. The lowest number was four flatus per day, and the highest was 59.
"Currently, no tools exist for continuous, non-invasive monitoring of hydrogen in flatus to track changes in gut microbial metabolism," the study noted.
"To address this gap, we developed the Smart Underwear, the first wearable device that continuously measures hydrogen gas expelled in flatus, providing unprecedented temporal resolution of gut microbial activity."
That's great, and all, but why should we care about how much we fart? Doctors can tell a lot about your gut health based on how often you release the rotten-egg-smelling gas known as a fart.
Or as we like to call it, a toot. Not farting enough can signal bowel obstruction, while farting too much can indicate a gut bacteria imbalance.
What are the benefits of farting?
1. It can help ease abdominal pain. Holding in your flatus can cause stomach pain or bloating.
2. It's good etiquette to hold your flatulence in while in public, but doing so too often can result in colon irritation.
3. Some studies have found that smelling your own farts can help protect your brain against Alzheimer's Disease.
4. Another study suggests that the hydrogen sulfide contained in fart gas can possibly help you age better.
5. Farting can also help with depression. Not the fart itself, but the act of releasing it. The instant relief can put a smile on just about anyone's face. A Harvard study is also examining how doctors can manipulate the gut microbiome to treat certain mental health conditions.
The next time your partner gives you the evil eye for "letting it rip", just inform them that farting is good for your health.
Just maybe don't do it in public!
