Is it appropriate to wear sleepwear and bonnets in public?
The debate around what’s considered appropriate public attire is back in the spotlight after a university banned certain clothing and footwear at its graduation ceremony.
Times have changed, and so has fashion. But one debate that never seems to disappear is what counts as appropriate attire in different public settings.
In recent years, social media has been divided over people wearing pyjamas, dressing gowns and bedroom slippers in public. Schools have also discouraged parents from dropping off their children while in sleepwear, while some retailers have introduced policies banning customers from entering stores dressed in pyjamas or gowns.
Now, the conversation has resurfaced after an American university, Tuskegee University, announced a dress code for its graduation ceremony. The institution prohibited graduating students from wearing certain clothing items, including 'Sneakers, fuzzy slippers, flip-flops, Crocs and heeled shoes over 4 inches in height'.
While some agreed that graduation is a special occasion deserving of a smart dress code, others questioned whether universities should regulate what students wear underneath their graduation gowns.
The discussion also raises a broader question like: should different public spaces have different dress codes?
For example, should Crocs, flip-flops or bedroom slippers be acceptable in the workplace?
Should universities enforce stricter dress codes during graduation ceremonies?
