Basetsana Kumalo shares five business lessons ahead of the MANCOSA Jacaranda FM Business Breakfast
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
One of South Africa's most loved television personalities and respected business leaders, Basetsana Kumalo, will take the stage at the upcoming MANCOSA Jacaranda FM Business Breakfast.
As one of South Africa's most loved television personalities and respected business leaders, Basetsana Kumalo is no stranger to evolving her brand.
Since being crowned Miss South Africa in 1994, she has traded her pageant crown for a series of executive hats, from building a career as a TV producer and media mogul, fashion designer, to property developer, mining executive, and dedicated mentor.
Starting her first media production business at just 20 years old, Basetsana's journey to success hasn't been without setbacks, including early business failures and five challenging years establishing her footprint in the male-dominated mining sector.
I do not know how not to work… When things got tough in mining, I thought about quitting, but I told myself: ‘Basetsana, you do not have the choice or an option to quit. You have a responsibility to use the platform, use the stage for the greater good.’ And so, we charged along.- Basetsana Kumalo
Bassie's top five business lessons
Here's Basetsana's top five rules for surviving in today's competitive business world:
1. Fuel your drive with true passion
"You have to have the passion for your business, cos when the going gets tough, that's what's going to drive and motivate you to keep going."
2. Surround yourself with sharper minds
"Surround yourself with people who are smarter, sharper and brighter than you. That's what it takes to be a leader. You need to surround yourself with people who know they have the talent and share your vision."
3. Reinvest in your business
"Make sure that you reinvest in the business. Once you make some profit, don’t go out and buy a Lambo; reinvest in your business. That's how you are able to scale up. That’s how you grow your business and have sustainability and longevity."
4. 'Love what you do'
"You have to wake up in the morning and say to yourself as an entrepreneur, I have an opportunity to create jobs. That inspires me every day to wake up, dream big, and work hard."
5. Stay true to your course
"Stay true to your course."
