South Africa celebrates Heritage Day on 24 September, and one of the things that makes the celebration special is seeing people proudly showcase their cultures through traditional attire.

Schools, workplaces, churches and communities often embrace traditional-wear themes in the days leading up to Heritage Day, giving everyone the opportunity to celebrate the country’s rich cultural diversity.

South Africa is home to many cultural and ethnic communities, including Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaaner, Cape Malay, Ndebele, Indian, Swati, Basotho, Bapedi, Batswana, Khoisan, Vhavenda and Tsonga communities, among others.

Traditional attire is one of the most visible ways people express this heritage, and what makes South Africa particularly interesting is the way cultures continue to influence one another. It is not unusual to see people incorporating different fabrics, accessories or styles into their Heritage Day outfits, while still celebrating their own cultural backgrounds.

Here are some traditional looks you may recognise this Heritage Day.
