When it comes to romantic nights, nothing beats sitting under a beautiful sky filled with stars and the moon. The only thing that could make it more special is a rare astronomical spectacle - a full lunar eclipse. Now’s your chance to grab this opportunity.
The last time we saw a full lunar eclipse was in 2011, but this Friday South Africans will get to witness another treat. The full eclipse of the moon will start at 9:30PM.
“This spectacle will capture the attention of millions, and we are especially fortunate here to have what are front-row seats to it. This extraordinary event will not come again to the region until 2029,” Eddy Nijeboer, Chairperson, Cape Centre of the Astronomical Society of South Africa (ASSA) told Business Insider.

We have thought of four date night ideas that won’t disappoint.
Rooftop dinner
If you don’t feel like having dinner at home, there are plenty of restaurants around the country that offer rooftop dinners.
If you are in Johannesburg you can visit Copper Bar in Bryanston, Forti Grill and Bar in Menlyn, The Island Bar in Hyde Park, Katy’s Palace Bar in Sandton or the Living Room in Maboneng.
For the Durbanites, the Lighthouse Bar in Umhlanga Rocks offers fantastic rooftop dining, and if you are in Cape Town, you can dine at Vue at The Capital Mirage or The Waiting Room located in the CBD.
Picnic under the stars
Get your blanket, champagne, glasses, chocolates and whatever you feel like eating for dinner and create a memorable night under the full moon. Any safe space with a clear view of the night sky will work.
Campfire date night
If you have a fire pit, this is the perfect day to throw a campfire date night.
Alternatively, you and your lover can enjoy watching the full moon through a telescope at the below places.
If you are in Stellenbosch, visit the Dirtopia Trail Centre and Café on Delvera. Members of the Orion Observation Astronomy Group will set up telescopes, and the eclipse will feature on-screen in the cafe. The entrance fee is R50.
If you are in Johannesburg you can go to Johannesburg Observatory and join the ASSA JHB from 6PM on the hill top at 18A Gill Street, Observatory.
Members of the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA) and astronomers from the SAAO, will be offering the public a guided tour with an array of telescopes at the V&A Waterfront. The event kicks off at 6PM, from the Flag Pole Terrace.
