The June holidays have officially started, and it is time for children to have as much fun as possible before it is back to school, back to reality.

Parents will be racking their brains trying to figure out how to keep their children entertained over the next three weeks.

Fear not, because there is a lot to do, and some activities will cost you as little as R50.

Here's a look at some of the fun things to do with the kids in Johannesburg during the school holidays.

Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary

If your child wants to channel their inner Steve Irwin and be a zookeeper for a day, then head on down to Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary in Midrand.

"We welcome children aged 6 to 16, so make sure to wear your old, comfy clothes and bring a rain jacket. Remember, no cell phones or cameras during the activities to keep the focus on the fun!" the park says on its website.

Some of the activities kids can look forward to include:

  • cleaning
  • preparing food
  • enrichment activities
  • attending conservation talks
  • personal encounters with ambassador animals.
