Gautrain extends R1 parking deal until September for Joburg commuters
Gautrain is continuing to ease the burden on cash-strapped commuters by extending its popular R1 parking promotion until September.
If you travel in and around Gauteng using the Gautrain, there’s some good news that could help you save a little extra money.
The Gautrain has extended its popular R1-per-day parking promotion until 1 September, giving commuters an affordable way to leave their cars at the station while using the train.
The rail service announced on Facebook on Wednesday that passengers can park at any Gautrain station for just R1 per day for up to 10 days, provided they complete a return train journey.
Standard parking tariffs will apply from day 11 onwards.
To qualify for the promotion, commuters must use their Gautrain card when entering and exiting the parking facility, and they must also tag in and out of the station during their journey. Vehicles must leave the parking area within one hour of the passenger tagging out to avoid penalty charges.
The R1 parking promotion was first introduced in 2025. At the time, Gautrain spokesperson Kesagee Nayager said the initiative was aimed at providing greater convenience and helping passengers save money.
"We’re excited to offer this incredible promotion to our customers during the upcoming school holidays. With parking fees reduced to just R1.00, and it’s a great opportunity for passengers to save money and enjoy a hassle-free travel experience.
"Whether you’re travelling for leisure or business, we encourage you to park at any Gautrain station, get your bags wrapped for free, and hop on the train to your destination."
The Gautrain remains one of the preferred ways to travel across Gauteng because of the convenience it offers. With Johannesburg serving as South Africa’s economic hub, thousands of people commute into the city every day for work.
Gautrain was launched on 8 June 2010 and since inception, the rapid rail network has recorded more than 216 million passenger trips.
