School holidays: Home Affairs extends operating hours for Smart ID applications in Johannesburg

School's out, and learners across Johannesburg are enjoying the winter holidays without having to worry about waking up early for school. Whether you’re planning to spend the break shopping at the city’s malls, visiting parks or simply relaxing with family and friends, this is also the perfect time to get one of the most important documents you’ll ever own - your Smart ID card.
If you’re 16 years or older and haven’t applied for your Smart ID card yet, now is the perfect time.
The Department of Home Affairs has extended its operating hours to help learners apply for and collect their Smart ID cards during the school holidays. The department announced on its social media platforms on Tuesday that offices will remain open until 6pm between 1 and 21 July 2026, allowing parents and guardians to bring learners to branches after work.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the department said: “Parents and guardians are encouraged to bring learners to Home Affairs offices nationwide during the extended operating hours to apply for or collect Smart ID cards.”
The initiative is aimed at making it easier for first-time applicants, who must visit a Home Affairs branch in person to complete their application.
South African citizens can apply for their first Smart ID card from the age of 16, and the document is one of the most important forms of identification you’ll need throughout your life.
A Smart ID card is required for a range of important things like applying to universities and colleges, opening a bank account, applying for a driver’s licence, seeking employment, accessing financial services and registering to vote once you are eligible.
First-time Smart ID applications are free for South African citizens.
Parents and guardians accompanying learners should ensure they bring the required supporting documents, including the learner’s birth certificate and their own South African ID document where applicable. Additional documentation may be requested depending on individual circumstances.
With Home Affairs offices located across Johannesburg, the extended operating hours provide a convenient opportunity to get this important task done during the holidays rather than waiting until the school term resumes.
