Hi, guys. Welcome to my channel.

It's a greeting many people, young and old, are all too familiar with, whether they like it or not.

However, if you want to make extra income or quit your 9-5 job, content creation could be the answer.

Despite the market being saturated, with the right strategy, discipline and consistency, you can become a successful content creator in 2026.

Here are a few tips to get you started.

Start with what you know

Some people think you need to be into fashion or makeup to be a successful content creator, but not everyone is into those sorts of things.

Start with what you know. If you are a nurse, painter, or teacher, you have skills and expertise that could be useful to others.

You can also think about something you love doing, and figure out how to make content around it.

Pick a niche

Just like in business, you can't make a product for everyone, which is why you need to be clear about what you do and who your audience is. Choosing a niche will not only help you grow a loyal following faster, but also help the algorithm select the right audience for your content.

Examples of how to niche down:

  • How to become a nurse in South Africa.
  • Mental health tips for teachers working in government schools.
  • Budget tips for people new to Joburg.
  • Fashion advice for corporate women in Sandton.

If you are using your existing career to create content, make sure you are aware of workplace policies, especially regarding confidentiality and filming.

You might have to try a few different things when you get started to see what works. If you are a nurse, you can create content on finance, mental health, and study tips, and then use your analytics to identify which posts or videos your audience is responding to most.

Pick a platform

You can pick more than one platform, but when you are just getting started, it's best to focus your energy on just one. Here's a look at some of the popular ones.

Focus on engagement

One of the best ways to grow your audience is to create content they love and respond to their comments. Don't underestimate the power of engagement. If you have a small following, high engagement can help you get brand deals. Some content creators have hundreds of thousands of followers, yet their audience doesn't interact with their posts.

  • Respond to comments.
  • Reply to DMs
  • Communicate through polls
  • Read comments and think of new content ideas (which also shows the audience you are listening)

Use free tools to up your skills

Don't be afraid to start just because you think you can't take great pictures or don't know how to edit. The more you post, the more you will improve those skills.

Use the free versions of Canva and Capcut to learn how to edit your pictures and videos. Every time you share a post, think of one thing you can do better. Before you know it you will be a pro.

Don't be an "influencer"

In 2026, you need to be more than an "influencer" to survive. As AI content creators and content creation rise, people will crave authenticity more.

You need to do more than just unbox PR packages. Be unique and become a master storyteller.

How much do content creators in South Africa make?

South African content creators don't make as much money as those in America, Europe and Australia. However, you can become a full-time content creator if you take it seriously. One of the best ways to make money is through brand deals. Brands are always looking for micro-influencers with high engagement to help sell their products.

Here are some other ways content creators make money:

  • Adsense Revenue
  • Paid partnerships
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Speaking engagements/Paid appearances
