The cost of school uniforms will make a grown man cry. Buying new uniforms at the start of the year can run into the thousands, depending on the school your child attends.

Most parents buy 2-3 sets of uniforms, which means the garments will get washed more than once a week.

Help prevent school uniforms from fading by cleaning them the correct way.

The first thing you should do before washing school uniforms is read the care label. Skirts, dresses, blazers, and pants are typically made from different fabrics. Washing instructions may differ.

The label will also advise you on which temperature to use and whether the garment can be ironed or not.

Don't forget to check pockets for tissue paper, pens and other items to prevent fabric damage.

1. Tackle stains as soon as possible: If your child comes home with a stained school uniform, don't wait for later. Treat the stain immediately, as this will make it easier to remove. Soak it in a stain remover or a mild detergent before washing for better results.

2. Cold water wash: While washing clothes in hot water is more effective for stain removal and bacteria removal, it can result in garments fading much faster. Cool temperatures will ensure less bleeding of colours.

3. Wash inside out: Turning the uniform inside out will prevent its colours from bleeding, which will lead to premature fading. According to several washing machine brands, it also reduces pilling, prevents odour retention, and protects designs, such as prints and embroidery.

4. Don't overload the washing machine: Not only will overstuffing your washing machine lead to poor cleaning, but it will also damage fabric. According to dry cleaning experts, excessive friction can cause fading and stretching.

5. Wash school uniforms separately: Avoid washing school uniforms with clothing items such as towels or jeans, even if they are the same colour. Heavier fabrics can damage delicate garments over time.

6. Don't overwash: Unless your child's school uniform is covered in dirt, don't wash items after one wear - except for socks. Overwashing can result in fading.

7. Don't tumble dry: The heat used in the tumble drying process will not only damage clothes but also cause fading. To make school uniforms last longer, it is best to let them air dry.

8. Hang inside out in summer: South African schools start the year in the middle of summer. The good news is your clothes will dry faster. The bad news is that the harsh sun rays will cause fading. To minimise sun damage, hang school uniforms inside out during the summer.
