There are only a few weeks left until the final matric examinations begin.

As scores of South African matric learners prepare to sit for their final examinations, the Department of Basic Education has released the final timetable.

The exams are scheduled to start on Tuesday, 13 October, and will conclude on Thursday, 26 November 2026.

However, learners writing practical examinations for subjects such as Visual Arts and Performing Arts will begin their examinations earlier, with practical assessments taking place from 1 September to 13 October.

With the countdown officially underway, preparation should not begin on the day of the examination. Learners should start putting in the work well ahead of time.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for the final matric examinations:

1. Don’t leave studying until the last minute

Start preparing and studying now rather than waiting until the final days before an examination. Give yourself enough time to work through the syllabus, identify areas you struggle with and revise them properly.

2. Prioritise your studies

Matric is an important year, so make studies a priority. You can still spend time with friends and attend social gatherings, but make sure these activities do not interfere with your study schedule.

3. Know your timetable

Make sure you check the examination timetable carefully and know exactly when you are writing each subject. This will help you plan your study time and avoid unnecessary stress as the examinations approach.

4. Get enough sleep and look after your health

Getting enough rest is just as important as studying. Try to maintain a healthy routine, get sufficient sleep and take regular breaks while studying. Being well-rested can help you stay focused and perform at your best.

6. Work through previous examination papers

Going through previous matric examination papers can help you familiarise yourself with the format and types of questions that may be asked. It can also help you identify areas where you need more revision.

5. Eat healthy, nutritious meals

Make sure you eat balanced meals and drink enough water to help maintain your energy and concentration. Also, eat brain-boosting foods. Check out a list of superfoods that are good for your brain here.
