Gauteng has been dealing with persistent rain and cold weather, with heavy downpours causing flooding and disrupting travel across parts of the province.

On Sunday, September 6, the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) urged motorists to exercise extreme caution across the city amid persistent heavy rainfall, wet road surfaces and severe localised flooding.

Images and videos shared on social media showed multiple vehicles submerged in floodwater, while motorists were diverted to alternative routes as some roads became difficult or impossible to navigate.

Residents were also warned about flooding around Siemert Road and Currey Street, Doornfontein, with motorists advised to avoid the affected areas and use alternative routes where possible.

On Monday, September 7, the Gauteng provincial government also urged residents to remain alert and exercise caution as rainy weather conditions continued across parts of the province.

The provincial government advised motorists to:

  • Reduce speed limit
  • Maintain a safe following distance
  • Avoid roads affected by flooding
  • Switch on headlights
  • Drive with extreme caution

If you encounter a flooded road, it is safest not to attempt to drive through the water. Floodwater can be deeper or faster-moving than it appears and may conceal damaged road surfaces or other hazards.

Emergency contact numbers to keep handy

Residents who come across stranded vehicles, dangerous obstructions or rising water levels can contact the City of Johannesburg’s call centre on 011 375 5911.

Other useful numbers include:

  • South African Weather Service: 012 12 367 6000.
  • City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services on 011 375 5911.
  • Police emergency: 10111
