Long drives have become the norm for many Joburg residents, but many dream of ditching their cars for walkable neighbourhoods.

In 2025, Johannesburg was named among the least walkable cities in the world. It received a low score of 18.38 out of 100 for walkability.

"Only 8% of residents live within 1km of a car-free space such as a park or plaza," Compare the Market said.

"Just 13% of locals live within 1km of healthcare or education, and despite attractions like rooftop bars in the CBD and the iconic Soweto cooling towers, Johannesburg remains highly car-dependent."

Well, Joburgers are tired of driving everywhere, and many are now prioritising walkable communities.

What is a walkable neighbourhood?

A walkable neighbourhood is one where people can walk to amenities such as parks, schools, grocery stores, gyms, and other services. Most of your daily errands can be done on foot. Safety is also of the utmost importance, as there is no use living in a walkable neighbourhood if you can't walk outside without looking over your shoulder every few minutes.

Why are walkable neighbours becoming popular?

Joburg is notorious for its high traffic volumes. According to Top Auto, over 5,242,216 vehicles are registered in Gauteng, accounting for 38.51% of South Africa's total vehicle population. Most people use their cars to drive to work or the shops on weekdays. If they want to meet up with friends and family, it usually involves a 40-minute drive.

The price of petrol is also pushing Johannesburg residents to more walkable communities.

Walkable neighbourhoods also fit in with Joburg's wellness culture. Walking to a park is appealing because it offers more opportunities to reach your 10,000 daily steps. Taking a stroll around the corner to meet friends at the local coffee or matcha cafe becomes part of a desirable lifestyle.

Walkable neighbourhoods also help build a sense of community. You see the same faces everywhere you go, and over time, you might even build a network of close friends in the area, start running clubs, and meet for lunch at a local restaurant.
