At Lorna Maseko's table, we all found our way home

There are meals you remember because they were delicious. Then some meals stay with you because they made you feel something...

The evening I stepped into Lorna Maseko's intimate six-course dining experience, I expected exceptional food. After all, this was curated by one of South Africa's most celebrated culinary voices. What I didn't expect was to leave carrying something far more nourishing than a satisfied appetite.

I left with home.

In a city like Johannesburg, where life rarely slows down and people often live hundreds of kilometres away from the families who raised them, "home" can begin to feel like a distant place. It becomes a memory rather than a destination. A feeling rather than a location.

The international celebrity chef reminded us that home can also be found around a table.

Every course was a love letter to South Africa. Familiar dishes that have fed generations were thoughtfully reimagined through the lens of fine dining without losing the soul that made them iconic. Magwinya arrived with elegance yet still carried the comforting familiarity of township mornings. Bobotie spoke of Sunday lunches where generations gathered around one table. Seven colours celebrated abundance, family traditions and the unspoken joy of everyone bringing "just one more dish." Milk tart, delicate and nostalgic, was the perfect reminder that some of life's sweetest moments are also the simplest.

These weren't merely recipes elevated for fine dining. They were stories plated with intention.

The menu didn't simply celebrate South African cuisine. It honoured South African identity.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of the evening wasn't only what was served on the plates, but who sat around the table.

People from different backgrounds, cultures and walks of life gathered as strangers, connected by something profoundly human. Between courses, conversations flowed effortlessly. Stories were exchanged. Laughter became the soundtrack of the evening. By the final course, the room no longer felt like a dining experience.

It felt like a family table.

Lorna Maseko did more than curate an exquisite menu. She curated a feeling.

In an era where luxury is often defined by exclusivity, expensive ingredients and spectacle, this experience quietly challenged that idea. True luxury isn't always found in imported delicacies or elaborate presentations. Sometimes luxury is remembering where you come from. It is honouring the food that raised you. It is sitting at a table where everyone feels welcome. It is creating space for people to slow down, connect and simply be present.

As the evening drew to a close, I realised something unexpected. The greatest ingredient of the night wasn't butter, lemon, spice or technique.

It was love.

Love for heritage. Love for community. Love for the recipes passed down through generations. Love for gathering people around one table and reminding them that, despite life's demands, home is never truly lost.

And for one unforgettable evening, Lorna Maseko reminded us that home isn't simply where we come from.

Home is the feeling we create when we choose to gather, share, remember and break bread together.
