School holidays are in full swing, and although it's short, keeping children entertained can still be a mission.

Children need to stay busy, and one of the easiest ways to keep them entertained is to let them play outside. Unfortunately, that may not be an option right now, with stormy weather affecting parts of Gauteng.

The stormy weather started on Monday evening, and according to the South African Weather Service, a yellow Level 2 warning for thunderstorms is in place for Tuesday, 29 September, until the evening.

Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela said Gauteng residents should prepare for cold temperatures, flooding, damaging winds and hail.

With thunderstorms, damaging winds and hail expected, it is best to keep children indoors and find other ways to keep them entertained.

Play board games

Board games are a great way to keep the whole family entertained indoors while spending some quality time together. They can also help improve problem-solving, memory and strategic thinking. Plus, they encourage friendly competition which can make family time even more fun.

Try quizzes

There are plenty of fun quizzes that can keep children entertained while also getting them thinking. Quizzes help children test their general knowledge and learn new things. You can find age-appropriate quizzes where you ask your children questions and let them compete against each other or even against the adults.

Cook or bake together

Rainy weather can be the perfect excuse to spend some time in the kitchen.

Depending on their ages, children can help with meal preparation, baking or even choosing what the family will have for lunch or dinner.

It’s a fun activity that also gives children an opportunity to learn valuable skills while spending time with their parents.

Make household chores fun

One of the great things about school holidays is that they give parents an opportunity to teach children some household responsibilities.

However, instead of simply telling them to clean or pack away their things, why not turn it into a game?

If you have more than one child, you could turn packing away toys into a competition to see who can pack the fastest while still being neat. You could even offer a small reward to make it more exciting.

Read a book together

Reading is another great way to keep children entertained while encouraging them to learn.

Choose a book suitable for the whole family and take turns reading it. If your children prefer e-books, you can also read digitally and discuss the story together afterwards.

Have story time

Use the rainy weather as an opportunity to share stories with your children.

Tell them stories from your childhood, teach them about family history or share stories that were passed down through generations. It can be a simple way to connect as a family while keeping the children entertained.

Watch a movie together

Sometimes, all you need is a good family movie.

Choose a movie that everyone can enjoy, make some snacks and turn it into a family movie afternoon. You could rent a movie on BoxOffice or choose something available on your preferred streaming service.

After all, rainy school holidays don’t have to mean bored children!
