Local woman finds her dreams in sleepwear
Kerry Godden, the founder of Kerry Godden Sleepwear, speaks to us about her sleepwear line and shares the secret to choosing the best pyjama and nightgown.
It’s essential to feel good, even when you go to sleep, and picking the right sleepwear can help you feel that way.
Kerry Godden, sleepwear designer, says having the right pyjamas or nightgown can make a woman feel sassy, elegant and even boost her confidence.
“There is nothing like a pair of silky pyjamas or a nightgown that makes you feel sassy and elegant. It’s a total boost of confidence, and it’s that feeling that revved up my passion for sleepwear. I want my clothes to evoke that feeling in as many women as possible,” says Kerry.
The 27-year-old designer from Durban says since high school she knew she was destined to be in the fashion and retail industry.
“Since high school, I always knew I wanted to do something within the fashion and retail space. Although I did not go on to study fashion design, I built my career within the retail industry as a merchandise planner. I studied Marketing Management and soon went on to find a role within the retail space. This is where I built my knowledge around the fashion industry and what goes into making a garment, from concept to completion. I always knew that I would one day start my own label, and I’m thankful to God that dream came true.”
When it comes to what makes her sleepwear different from the rest, Kerry says she not only focuses on styles that are classic and timeless but fabrics that create a luxe feel, that’s soft to the touch, comfortable and that make a woman feel sexy. “Many of my pieces are transitional, so depending on how you style them, they are suitable for lounging around indoors, as well as outdoors,” she adds.
Kerry says she draws inspiration for her designs from her surroundings. “Whether it’s a colour, silhouette or a pattern I’m obsessed with, or simply a beautiful fabric, it’s usually that element that determines the theme or atmosphere I try to create around my garments.” She is also inspired by Spanish retailer OYSHO.
When it comes to choosing the perfect sleepwear, Kerry says “comfort is key”.
One lesson her journey as a designer has taught her is that nothing is impossible, and you are your greatest resource.
Her advice to aspiring designers is to “follow your dreams. There is no richer feeling than persevering and accomplishing what you set out to.”
Kerry says she is hoping to extend her range into daywear.
“I believe the future is bright for Kerry Godden, and I am hoping to one day to extend my range into daywear as well as intimates.”
