How to play Mzansi Quest

Jacaranda FM has partnered with Tracker to create a safe, virtual experience for families, teams, and individuals to explore South Africa’s most iconic locations – without ever needing to leave the house!

Mzansi Quest is a free online game where players can take part in a virtual treasure hunt to track down some of South Africa’s most precious artefacts... all in the hopes of winning the grand prize of R50 000.

The event goes live on 21 June 2021 and you can play all week at any time until the 28th. 

How to play:

You visit jacarandafm.com and click/tap on the Mzansi Quest banner.​

The Mzansi Quest website opens in a new window, displaying a landing page with information about the quest, and a registration box.  

(NB. If the system has reached capacity for the day, a dialogue box will appear, asking you to try again later.)

 You will enter the following registration information:​

  • Name and surname​
  • Mobile number​
  • Email address​
  • Marketing opt-in​
  • Agree to terms and conditions​
  • When all fields are filled, you click/tap the “Start Quest” button.​
  • You will be asked to allow mic permissions​
  • Then you will be asked to select an avatar​
  • You arrive in a tutorial pod in VR.  The Tutorial sequence runs, customized to your device. 
You will learn how to:​
  • Look around/turn
  • Move forward and backwards.​

What happens next: 

  • Once you have reached the tutorial finish, you will be beamed across into the Welcome Area.  
  • You will also be able to have a full view off the deck of all the Areas, which are the Areas that you will be moving through, an SA player, starting with Johannesburg and the Nelson Mandela Bridge. 
  • An inventory panel appears at the top of your screen, with 5 spaces for the treasures they will collect.​​
  • Virtual assistants (“Tracker Care bots”) will greet you on arrival and assist as required.​
  • You are encouraged to take a virtual selfie in the welcome area, with options to share to social media.​
  • Once orientated, you will be beamed into the welcome area and moves into Area 1, which is Nelson Mandela Bridge/Johannesburg.
  • You can explore Area 1, and begin looking for the first hidden treasure.  You can optionally learn more about the featured landmarks by clicking/tapping on interactive location labels, which trigger text pop up boxes.​
  • A highlight animation is triggered when you approach the hidden treasure object in Area 1.  As you move within proximity of the object, a camera shutter effect is triggered, and the treasure is added to their inventory panel.​
  • A text prompt appears, telling you that you have found the first treasure, and should move to the next area to continue your quest.​The treasure hunt process is repeated through areas 2 - 5, with you collecting 1 treasure per area.​
  • When the last treasure is collected, a success animation is triggered.  A dialogue box congratulates you for completing the quest.  The date and time of the next draw/winner announcement will be displayed.​
  • You are transported to the “Jacaranda Lounge”, where you will find other Users, enjoying the Jacaranda FM live radio stream.

Here are the basic controls when using a computer:​

  • TURN/LOOK AROUND: Click and drag across the screen​
  • MOVE: Press W to move forwards, S to reverse​
  • SPEED BOOST: Hold down SHIFT​
  • HIDE ANOTHER PLAYER: Click on the user menu icon in the top right corner of your screen.  Tap on the player’s name, then select “Hide”​

​Controls when using a smartphone:

  • TURN: Swipe across the top half of your screen​
  • MOVE: Swipe up on the bottom left of your screen​
  • HIDE ANOTHER PLAYER: Tap on the user menu icon in the top right corner of your screen. Tap on the player’s name, then select “Hide”​
When you talk through your mic, others in the room can hear you. The closer you are to someone, the louder they are, just like in real life. You can mute or unmute your mic at any time.​

Players can control who they interact with and can choose to “hide” another player from the user list in the top right corner of the screen.​

NB: The platform can accommodate 600 concurrent users and has a maximum capacity of 2000 users in a 24 hour period.​
