The accident happened Friday evening in the northbound carriageway of the N2 highway on Umbogintwini Hill.

Netcare 911's Chris Botha was on the scene and said the school bus went through the Armco barriers, rolled and landed up in the veld.

He said there were a number of injuries.

"So far, we've got two people who are critical, the rest sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Paramedics and firemen are working fervently here at the scene to try and stabilise them," he said.

It is the second bus accident today on the south coast involving school children.

Earlier on Friday, more than 50 children were hurt when their bus overturned on the R603 in Umbumbulu.

The Department of Sports and Recreation has confirmed in a statement that those injured in the Umbumbulu crash were part of the Umgungundlovu District team, who had been on their way to take part in the Provincial Indigenous Games in Margate.
