'Extra funds won't end #FeesMustFall'

Universities and students will receive an additional R17 billion over the next three years‚ finance minister Pravin Gordhan announced in his medium-term budget policy statement.

Fees protests

But students are not happy.


Some believe the extra funds will not make a big difference. 

Students across the country are demanding free higher education.

In addition to the R16 billion added to higher education funding in the February budget, Gordhan proposed a further R9 billion for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and over R8million to meet the costs of fee increases for students from households with incomes up to R600 000.


Universities have been plagued with ongoing student protests which have seen several students arrested.

Government capped fee hikes for 2017 at 8%, but students are adamant in their call for free quality higher education.
