Zuma appointed the commission in January, with an expectation to complete its task within eight months.

The Presidency says the commission will now complete its work by the 30 June 2017 and is expected to submit a preliminary report to the president on or before 15 November.

The commission was established in response to the Fees Must Fall protests across the country. Its task is to investigate the feasibility of free higher education and to make recommendations.

In a statement, the Presidency says the commission's chair, retired Supreme Court of Appeal judge Jonathan Heher, asked for more time.
