Gauteng working hard to improve quality education: Lesufi
The Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi delivered his 2016/17 budget speech in the provincial legislature on Thursday.
The department said it was working hard to turn around the quality of education across all township schools.
Lesufi stated that the department inherited schools in 1994 that lacked even the most basic facilities.
"An assessment in 1996 revealed 17.4 percent of schools in Gauteng were without electricity, 32.9 percent of schools were without water. We are pleased as the Gauteng provincial government to declare the following today: There is no single school in Gauteng that does not have a flushing toilet. There is no single school in Gauteng that does not have electricity. There is no single school in Gauteng that does not have access to clean water," Lesufi said.
Amid the tough economic environment, the education department's budget managed to receive a bigger slice of the pie- increasing from R36 billion to R39 billion for the 2016/17 financial year.
