Gordhan's arrest would be a disaster for SA: DA
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
The DA says the fact that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has been requested to report to the Hawks on Thursday is a major escalation in the so-called "SARS Wars".
Treasury has confirmed that Gordhan received correspondence from the Hawks, saying the minister is taking legal advice.
This, in connection with the investigation into the so-called SARS 'rogue unit' that was established when Gordhan was the commissioner.
The DA's Shadow Finance Minister, David Maynier said the fact that the minister will report to the Hawks suggests that he will be informed about possible charges and may even face arrest.
"The arrest of the Finance Minister would shatter investor confidence, risk a sovereign ratings downgrade and be a disaster for the already fragile zero growth, zero jobs economy in South Africa," Maynier said.
Maynier said the only option to get to the bottom of the allegations relating to the SARS “rogue unit” is the appointment of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry in terms of Section 84 of the Constitution.
