Maimane: Pray for your leaders and country
Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane on Sunday urged South Africans to pray for the country and its leaders.
“I hold one simple belief, and that is that everything is spiritual. That the solutions to our county, the solutions to the economy, the solutions to our peace and stability, to racism, to whatever, all of that flows from the king of kings and lord of lords,” Maimane told the congregation of the Christian Revival Church in Pretoria.
“I am deeply, deeply humbled to have the privilege of being able serve in our nation at such a time as this. If I could invite you to do anything for our country, it would be to continue to pray for our country and to pray for all our leaders.”
Maimane, himself a pastor, attended the service on Sunday morning along with the DA’s Tshwane mayor-elect Solly Msimanga.
Maimane said a person’s political affiliation was irrelevant in some ways. “All of us are bound together because we want to live in a prosperous nation, a safe country, a place we can call home.”
Much as churches in South Africa looked after widows and orphans, politicians should do the same. Maimane said no matter which role he played, there was no separation when it came to looking after people.
“I think we get the great privilege of being able to serve in government looking after those who are lost. I want to invite you, just in the next journey of our country, just to keep praying for us and to keep being bold in our nation.”
Maimane said people should not “switch off”, thinking that the country’s problems were not the concern of ordinary people and that there was nothing they could do to help. “You are a part of the solution as much as anybody is,” he said.
