The coalition remains resolute in its call for the SABC board chairperson Mbulaheni Maguvhe to resign.

SOS coordinator Sekoetlane Phamodi says the coalition is concerned that Parliament's Communications Portfolio Committee might abandon the inquiry into the board's fitness to hold office, if the board chair resigns.

"The portfolio committee must continue with the inquiry so we can really understand why successive boards continue to fail in the way that they do," he says.

Meanwhile, the DA says the resignation comes as no surprise.

The DA leader's spokesperson Mabine Seabe says: "This is a board that is not fit to steer the SABC into the right direction."

He says the crisis at the SABC must be solved as a matter of urgency.

"We need to ensure the SABC serves the interest of South Africa and not the political elite."

Khumalo's resignation comes after Krish Naidoo and Vusi Mavuso announced their resignations during an emergency parliamentary communications portfolio committee meeting earlier this month.

Naidoo told the committee the board is dysfunctional and should be dissolved.
