Student union threatens to shut down universities for a year

The South African Union of Students
(SAUS) says it will shut down all universities
in the country if free education is not implemented in 2017.
The plan of action was discussed during the union’s three day national executive meeting this weekend.
SAUS Secretary General Sthembiso Ndlovu says free education is long overdue.
“Free education has been a call since the inception of SRC’s and the Higher Education Act,” he said.
Ndlovu says they are prepared to shut down universities for a year.
“It’s high time the democratic government introduced free education. This current generation of students are very committed to this cause. We didn’t decide this alone as SAUS, we called all SRC’s to come to the table,” he said.
Ndlovu says they are meeting with the presidential task team dealing with the feasibility of free education in August to present proposals.
