Students blame management for violence at the University of Limpopo
The University of Limpopo is the latest institution of higher learning to suspend academic activities following nationwide protests for free education.
Students were ordered to vacate campus property.
The notice was issued after five students were apprehended by campus security.
They were identified as those behind the action - which started at a night vigil on Tuesday.
Two students were released while three others were taken to the police station and charged with public violence.
Student Johannes Moleli says students were provoked by university management.
Samson Mahlatsi was one of those arrested. He told Jacaranda FM News that he and his co-accused were released without appearing in court. The charges were dropped.
But the institution's spokesperson Kgalema Mohuba says there are rogue elements on campus - and the university wants to address this during the shutdown.
"In order to save the students and university property we decided to give students a cool off period" he said.
The university has been closed indefinitely.
