When one of the most powerful men in the world at a time would frequently point to the importance of education in facilitating social change, it should follow then that education should be a core priority for any society. The education legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela lives on.
Look at this image: the life partner of the world's most powerful politician and the most powerful man in South African history holding a book. It's simple, yet effective as it displays the link between power and education. Michelle Obama and Nelson at a moment in time, during Madiba's last years on earth.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela affectionately known by his clan name 'Madiba' was a man who prioritised education as a means of empowerment and social change.
As South Africa's first democratically elected president, Madiba was honoured by numerous educational institutions with honorary doctorates for leading the team that realised the peaceful transition to democracy through negotiations. In 1998, Harvard University in the US held a special convocation ceremony for Madiba, where an honorary doctorate was conferred upon him.
At Jacaranda FM, Project Khanya was started in the spirit of celebrating the education legacy left by Madiba, to provide light to young learners in need without access to study lamps at home.
