Bonang Matheba criticises Gayton McKenzie over bringing Jay-Z's show to SA

Superstar Bonang Matheba has expressed her disappointment after Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie hinted that he would love to bring Jay-Z's show to South Africa.
It's no secret that many South African artists are struggling financially, and this appears to be at the heart of media personality Bonang Matheba’s dissatisfaction with Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie.
Over the weekend, McKenzie shared images and videos of himself in Paris, where he attended the highly anticipated JAŸ-Z 30 concert at the Stade de France.
The September 10 concert celebrated the rapper's 30 years in music.
The McKenzie explained that he was in France to attend the Lumière Film Summit when Roc Nation invited him to the show.
Following the concert, the minister said he insisted that the “cultural phenomenon” should be brought to fans in South Africa.
However, the comment did not sit well with Matheba.
She questioned the minister's priorities, asking why money that could be used to bring international shows to South Africa could not instead be directed towards supporting local events and industries, including the South African Music Awards and South African film and television.
She also highlighted the financial struggles faced by South Africans and called on the minister to start by prioritising local creatives.
The comments come amid ongoing concerns from South African artists about the level of support they receive from government and the financial challenges facing the local entertainment industry.
Jay-Z has performed in South Africa before, meaning a potential return would not be his first time on a South African stage. The rapper previously performed in the country in 2006 tour and was also part of the 2008 Global Citizen Festival.
Brought to SA? Why? What about the SAMAs? SAFTAs? The locals need money, Sir!! Let’s start THERE!!
