DJ Black Coffee wins legal battle, resulting in Maserati needing to pay him R7-million
DJ Black Coffee is set to receive R7 million following a legal dispute, which stemmed from his decision to trade in his Maserati MC20 Coupé for a customised MC20 Cielo.
DJ Black Coffee has come out victorious in a legal battle involving Maserati South Africa and a luxury car that was never delivered to him.
The Grammy Award-winning DJ has built an impressive career that has taken him across the globe, and with that success has come a taste for some of the finer things in life. From international travel to his love for luxury cars, Black Coffee has never been shy about enjoying the rewards of his hard work.
So, when it came to his next car, a standard model simply wasn’t quite enough.
In 2022, Black Coffee purchased a Maserati MC20 Coupé for around R7 million. He later decided to return the vehicle and requested a customised Maserati MC20 Cielo, which was valued at approximately R9 million. It would feature Maserati Blu Infinito exterior colour, glossy black diamond-cut wheels and an interior finished in leather and Alcantara. He also selected a Sonus Faber sound system with 12 speakers, customised stitching and specific colours for the seat belts, interior finishes and brake calipers.
The agreement reportedly meant that Maserati South Africa would trade in the original car for R7 million, with Black Coffee agreeing to pay the remaining R2 million.
However, things did not go according to plan.
Black Coffee was reportedly informed that work on the customised vehicle would only begin in August, with no confirmed delivery date provided. This left the DJ unhappy with the arrangement, and he subsequently requested that the R7 million trade-in amount be refunded.
According to reports, Maserati South Africa did not agree to refund the full amount, arguing that the vehicle was by then worth less than R7 million. The dealership reportedly maintained that the R7 million value had been agreed to specifically as part of the trade-in arrangement.
The dispute eventually escalated into a legal battle, with Black Coffee seeking the return of the R7 million.
On Monday, several publications reported that the DJ had won the case at the Johannesburg High Court, with Maserati South Africa ordered to reimburse him the R7 million relating to the original vehicle and 10.5% annual interest from 22 August 2025 until the full amount is settled, as well as the legal costs of the proceedings.
