Don McLean's wife has filed for divorce
Don McLean's wife Patrisha has filed for divorce, citing "adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, and irreconcilable differences."
The 'American Pie' hitmaker's spouse Patrisha McLean, 56, has decided splitting from the singer is "in her best interest, both physically and emotionally" as she has gained "strength and insight away from his influence and control" in the two months since his arrest on domestic violence allegations.
Patrisha's lawyer, Gene Libby told the New York Daily News newspaper: "After having time to reflect on her marriage, Patrisha decided that divorce is in her best interest, both physically and emotionally.
"Since Don McLean's arrest for domestic violence assault, domestic terrorising, domestic violence criminal threatening, criminal restraint and criminal mischief on January 18, 2016, Don has been prohibited from contacting her, and she has gained strength and insight away from his influence and control."
The lawyer went on to claim Patrisha has been the subject of "many abusive episodes" during her 30-year marriage to the 70-year-old singer.
The lawyer added: "The domestic violence event of January 18, 2016 is one of many abusive episodes resulting from his rage and controlling behaviour throughout the marriage.
The divorce petition was filed in Rockland District Court, citing "adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, and irreconcilable differences."
Don has pleaded not guilty in the criminal case and is due back in court next month.
