Film Critic: Oscars 2017 could be the most boring in history

Hollywood is getting ready for the film industry's biggest night, the Academy Awards.

While everyone is taking out their best suits and designer dresses to grace the red carpet, SA film expert, Leon van Nierop says this year's Oscars could be the most boring in the history of the Academy Awards.

"La La Land is bound to sweep the ceremony with at least 10 awards," van Nierop says.

He adds that Hollywood is narcissistic and despite the negative Trump area the film's timing is perfect as it is a feel-good musical movie.

"You've got to remember that Hollywood is completely in love with itself and therefore it will vote for a film about itself," he says.

While US President Donald Trump has already indicated that he won't be watching the Oscars, van Nierop says we can nonetheless expect a plethora of anti-Trump acceptance speeches.

When it comes to the big categories, van Nierop says Damian Chazelle for La La Land is likely to take the statuette for best director, while he would prefer if Manchester By The Sea's Kenneth Lonergan won.

Casey Affleck is also likely to win for best supporting actor.

"Best actress will go to Emma Stone while I would prefer it if Natalie Portman wins for her role as Jackie Kennedy in Jackie," van Nierop says.

Finally, van Nierop says, Best Supporting Actress is a done deal with Viola Davis who steals the show in the Denzel Washington movie Fences.
