Harry Styles honours Liam Payne by living life to the fullest
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
The death of his former One Direction bandmate made Harry Styles question what he wants to do with his life.
Harry Styles says Liam Payne had the "kindest heart" and "just wanted to be great".
The British singer reflects on Payne's death in a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music. Styles and Payne were both members of One Direction.
Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson were also part of the boy band.
While the group released a joint statement after Payne fell to his death from a hotel balcony in October 2024, Styles has not publicly spoken about his passing until now.
"Even the idea of talking about it, I struggle with that a little bit," he told Lower.
"I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with kind of like acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like own part of your grief in a way. I have such strong feelings around my friend passing."
Styles says it is difficult to lose a friend, especially one who is just like him in "so many ways".
Despite being heartbroken over Payne's death, the 'As It Was' hitmaker says losing a "special person" has given him a new outlook on life.
"It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, 'OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?' And I think the greatest way you can honour your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest," the 32-year-old said.

Harry Styles' New Album
Styles was speaking to Lowe as part of the promotion for his new album, 'Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.
The album, which is his fourth as a solo artist, will debut on Friday, March 6. The project's lead single, 'Aperture', was released in January.
During the sit-down at Le Pure Café in Paris, Styles explains why he selected the song as his first single.
"Do I do this because this is what I have been doing for a long time, or do I do this because I really love it. Being able to look at myself and just grow up a little bit and take responsibility for places in my life where it was maybe my fault, just freed me from so much.
"It's why I think 'Aperture' felt like a perfect start to me. You can move forward when you acknowledge the things that you don't know and therefore give yourself the space to let light come in"
