The 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July has come and gone, but conversations around the theme, fashion and grand arrivals are far from over.
The 130th edition of the iconic event was celebrated this year with the theme, "Country Allure", which divided fashion lovers.
While some embraced the celebration of South Africa's countryside, others felt the theme had been misunderstood, with several looks leaning more towards the Wild West than Country Allure.
The theme celebrates the elegance of South Africa's countryside, blending equestrian-inspired tailoring, natural textures and luxurious details into looks that are both timeless and distinctly local.
But the Durban July isn't only about what celebrities and influencers wear – it's also about how they arrive.
Media personality and fashion designer Somizi Mhlongo and radio personality Zola Mhlongo turned heads before the event with a glamorous photoshoot alongside a private jet, embracing luxury as part of their interpretation of the theme.
Meanwhile, travel and lifestyle content creator Thobeka "Thobi Rose" Mthembu and Big Brother Titans star Siyamthanda "Juicy Jay" Jwacu chose a different route.
Instead of flying, they drove from Johannesburg to Durban, embracing the countryside and the theme's spirit long before they stepped onto the red carpet.
The drive from Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal offers rolling hills, vineyards, game reserves, horse farms and sweeping open landscapes – all of which capture the essence of Country Allure.
It begs the question: why drive when flying to the Durban July has become part of the glamour?
For Jwacu and Mthembu, the journey itself became part of the experience.
Jacaranda FM NewsWatch caught up with the pair, whose social media content created plenty of anticipation before they even arrived at the Durban July.
"Listen, first of all, authentically, I'm a guy who just enjoys road trips. I love road-tripping. Also, the route from Joburg to Durban is a glorious one—it's very beautiful.
"It was also an opportunity to explore the countryside in style with Avis Luxury Cars.
"So I got to drive in style and comfort.
Arriving at the Durban July means arriving in style, right? Whether you're flying there, fly in style. If you're driving there, drive in style," said Jwacu.
For Mthembu, whose content often showcases her travels, driving was an easy choice.
"Firstly, I love exploring South Africa, and I've always explored it by car. I think you experience so much more of the country, the scenery and the changing landscapes, when you drive.
"It also doesn't hurt when you're driving an amazing Avis luxury car that makes the journey comfortable and helps you arrive safely. That's why I chose to drive instead of fly," she said.
The 2026 Durban July also served as another reminder that South Africans are among the most creative storytellers when it comes to fashion.
Months of planning came together in bold, theatrical and unforgettable interpretations of the Country Allure theme.
Among the standout looks was celebrity stylist Phupho Gumede, who transformed into a striking white horse complete with sculpted hooves, drawing admiration for his bold interpretation.
Entertainer and creative director Nomuzi "Moozlie" Mabena also earned widespread praise for her Ndebele-inspired ensemble, which paid tribute to internationally acclaimed visual artist and cultural ambassador Esther Mahlangu.
Another crowd favourite was DJ Linda Moeketsi, whose cow-inspired look was impossible to miss. From the moment she arrived, the design's inspiration was unmistakable, earning applause from fashion lovers across social media.
Whether celebrated or criticised, this year's Country Allure theme proved that fashion is open to interpretation.
From dramatic private-jet arrivals to scenic road trips through South Africa's countryside, celebrities and influencers found different ways to tell their stories.
In the end, it wasn't only the outfits that left a lasting impression, but also the journeys, creativity and personal interpretations that continue to make the Hollywoodbets Durban July one of South Africa's biggest celebrations of fashion, culture and storytelling.
