'Legally Blonde' prequel 'Elle' gets a release date
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
The 'Legally Blonde' prequel will hit our screens in 2026 with a young Elle Woods navigating life as a teenager.
Two decades ago, Reese Witherspoon made her debut as Elle Woods, and now she is making way for a new generation.
Prime Video's TV series 'Elle', which is based on the 'Legally Blonde' franchise, will be released on July 1.
Rising star Lexi Minetree will play a teenage Elle in the series.
"In Season One, Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first 'Legally Blonde' film," a statement read.
The series is a joint project between Amazon MGM Studios, and Witherspoon's production company, Hello Sunshine.
The 49-year-old will also serve as an executive producer.
“Twenty-five years after the world met Elle Woods for the first time, it’s a dream come true to share the story of how she became the unstoppable force we all fell in love with,” Witherspoon said.
The show's first official poster has also been released.
"Every icon has an iconic beginning. Elle, from the world of 'Legally Blonde', premieres July 1 on @primevideo."
Minetree was unveiled as the new Elle Woods in February 2025. Witherspoon personally told her she got the part.
"Discovering Lexi Minetree and watching her step into Elle’s fabulous shoes has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career," Witherspoon said in a statement.
"I think our series’ themes of kindness, authenticity, and believing in yourself will resonate deeply with fans of the original films and new audiences alike. Working with our incredible Hello Sunshine team, Amazon and our visionary writers and directors to bring Elle's high school journey to life has been a tremendous joy."
Minetree also shared her excitement on Instagram.
"Thank you to @reesewitherspoon for handing me down Elle Woods. I already love her so so much, I promise she’s in good hands. P.S. Thank you for showing me how amazing I am going to look in the future, soooo looking forward to that."
Season one hasn't debuted yet, but 'Elle' has already been renewed for a second season.
The cast includes June Diane Raphael (Elle’s mother Eva) and Tom Everett Scott (Elle's father Wyatt).
Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney, and Zac Looker will also feature, while stars such as 'Dawson's Creek' actor James Van Der Beek will also make appearances.
"Elle captures the heart, confidence, and optimism that made Elle Woods an enduring cultural icon, while giving audiences a fresh and deeply personal coming-of-age story. Peter Friedlander, global head of Television, Amazon MGM Studios, said.
"Ordering a second season speaks to our belief in the creative vision and the incredible team behind the series, and we’re excited for audiences to experience Elle’s journey starting with Season One."
